Dear Colleagues,

I am writing to encourage you to join me and become a member of the American String Teachers Association, an organization that I joined ten years ago while on the faculty of Michigan State University.

"The American String Teachers Association, founded more than 60 years ago, is a membership organization for string and orchestra teachers and players, helping them to develop and refine their careers.  ASTA's members range from budding student teachers to artist-status performers.  The organization provides a vast array of services, including instrument insurance, an award-winning scholarly journal, discounts on publications and resources, annual professional development opportunities, and access to collegial network of colleagues from throughout the string profession."1

Through its regional and national conferences and publications, ASTA provides forums for the exchange of ideas, the opportunity to learn from innovators in the field of education, and the chance to influence string teaching through your own expert contributions. ASTA also provides opportunities for your students through competitions, performances, and scholarships. In addition, an orchestra director and studio teacher who belong to ASTA, are awarded annually at the MMEA All-State Conference in recognition of their achievements and dedication to their field.

In ASTA I have found a nationwide community of committed professional educators. I guarantee that your participation in this fine organization will make a difference.

Sincerely,

Sharan Leventhal
Higher Education Representative to the Board, Massachusetts ASTA
